Most gardeners can name the tools they cannot live without: Spade … trowel … gardening gloves … garden hose …

But beyond the must-haves, extras can make gardening easier and more fun. That’s why I’ve put together this list of top gadgets for home gardeners.

Gadgets are clever tools that seem novel at the outset. But I’ve found that I use a gadget for a while and it becomes almost necessary.

Whether you’re a new or experienced gardener – or want to give a special gift to the grower in your life – consider these gadgets for home gardeners.

Top fun (and necessary) gadgets for home gardeners

1. Hori Hori Garden Knife

This versatile tool for digging, cutting, and measuring has a serrated and straight edge. Use it for a variety of tasks, including weeding, transplanting, and prying apart roots. The Hori Hori garden knife has a concave, sharp blade. Get one that’s marked with depth measurements to make it easier to plant bulbs, create furrows, and divide perennials.

2. Soil Moisture Meter

“How much water do my plants need?” A soil moisture meter takes the guesswork out of that question. It’s got a handheld probe that you insert in the ground to measure the water content in the ground. You’ll get a reading that shows how wet or dry the soil is, so you’ll know when to water your plants – and how much. A soil moisture meter helps you prevent over-watering or under-watering.

Another plus: different areas of your garden have different moisture content. And various plants need more water than others. Use your soil moisture meter to help different crops thrive.

Advanced soil moisture meter models measure additional factors like temperature, pH, and light.

3. Pruning Saw

Your hand clippers are useful, but simply can’t lop off thick branches. A pruning saw can.

It’s a hand tool with a long, sharp blade and large teeth, and typically cuts on a pull stroke to nab overgrown plants and keep your garden neat. If you’ve got limited storage space, a folding pruning saw is even better. And if you’ve got large trees and high branches, a pruning pole saw can reach them.

4. Garden Dibber

A garden dibber is a traditional hand tool used to poke holes in the soil for planting seeds, bulbs, and seedlings. If you have a dibber and use it, you understand how indispensable it is. If you don’t have one – well, get it yesterday.

Most dibbers are made of wood, plastic, or metal. Use your dibber to make uniform holes of a specific depth. Look for a version that has depth markings (so you can create consistent holes) and comfortable T-handles (which makes it easier to use.)

Tomato Growing Tip #125: Use Velcro plant ties to go gentle on plants and save money with Tomato Dirt #GardeningTips #Tomatoes #Staking

5. Velcro Garden Ties

Velcro garden ties are reusable hook-and-loop fasteners. Use them for everything from staking tomatoes to training vines on a trellis.

Velcro ties are a versatile alternative to traditional wire or string, but with 2 distinct advantages:

  • They provide support for delicate stems without causing damage, because of the softer, adjustable, and often cut-to-length material
  • They’re reusable. They’re good on the wallet and good for the environment.

6. Herb and Veggie Shears

Herb and veggie shears are specialized scissors designed for cutting fresh produce, from basil to broccoli. They’ve got sharp, stainless-steel blades with serrated edges for a secure grip on stems.

Many models have ergonomic handles for comfort, take-apart blades for easy cleaning. Some include stem strippers or multiple blades for faster chopping. In the kitchen, you’ll find that herb and veggie shears make precise, clean cuts on both delicate herbs and tough vegetables. Cooks like how these shears preserve flavor and appearance of their produce.

7. Waterproof Gardening Pants

Mud, thorns, water: gardeners live in the dirt. But waterproof gardening pants keep you dry in messy conditions.

They are made from durable, lightweight, washable, and often quick-drying fabrics like nylon, polyester, PVC, and Gore-Tex. Some come with a waterproof lining or reinforced knees, padded kneepads, and special pockets for tools. Waterproof gardening pants protect from rain and moisture, making gardening in wet weather more comfortable.

8. Over-Boot Slippers

You’re an hour into working in the hot garden and you need to slip indoors for a drink of water and bathroom break. Do you take off your garden shoes … or track mud into your house?

Neither. Over-boot slippers slide over your shoes or boots to keep your indoor floors clean. Keep them by your back door. They allow you to step inside without taking off your nasty shoes, and are useful for keeping mud, dirt, and other debris out of your home. Choose a design with flip-up heel so you can slip them on and off hands-free. Most are made with felt so they can be hand-washed, air-dried, and used over and over.

9. Seed Starting Heat Mat

For gardeners who like to start their own plants from seeds, a seed starting heat mat is an especially helpful gadget.

Place this waterproof, rubberized pad under your seed trays and pots. It generates gentle heat – which in turn speeds up germination and increases success rates. The mat works by warming the soil, which is especially beneficial for heat-loving crops like tomatoes, peppers, and basil. And a seed starting mat offsets any overnight chill in your growing area.

10. Gardening Tool Belt

Oh, the frustration! You’ve been pruning back your tomato plants but now you need your trowel to dig out a nasty weed. So you trudge back to the wheelbarrow on the other side of the garden to retrieve it.

But with a gardening tool belt, your gardening gizmos and doodads are right at hand. A gardening belt can hold essential gardening tools like clippers and gloves, keeping them easily accessible. This frees your hands to work. And it eliminates the need for you to repeatedly walk back and forth to your shed or cart for item – or worse, drop the tool you’ve been using and lose it in your gardening abyss.

Gardening tool belts are made of durable material like canvas. Its pouches, pockets, compartments, and loops store tools, supplies, and personal items like a water bottle or your phone. Look for one with an adjustable belt for a secure fit.
