Tumbling Tom Tomatoes Aren't Tumbling

by Cary
(Iowa)

Q. I potted up 6 hanging baskets with tumbling toms, 3 red and 3 yellow. They look great and are about 22 inches tall, They are not tumbling over but growing straight up. Will they eventually fall over or do I need to plant them in the basket a certain way, say on an angle?
Thanks for any advice you can give.

A. Once your Tumbling Tom tomatoes have fruit, they will become more weighted down and will naturally "tumble" more readily. In the meantime, you can help things a long a little bit by using staking ties and gently guide shoots at a 45-degree angle downward. This will also help plants as fruit develops and prevent stems from snapping from the weight.

Good luck and happy gardening!
